September is Preparedness Month
In outdoor exploration, it’s better to have and not need than need and not have. September is Preparedness Month; for many, ‘preparedness’ and ‘survivalism’ are synonymous, but there are important distinctions.
Survivalism is typically associated with a militaristic, dare we say ‘doomsday’ mentality. Think: stockpiling nonperishable foods, bottled water, firearms/ammunition, etc. Preparedness, on the other hand, considers all aspects of one particular journey and supplements accordingly.
Preparedness has a special focus on being informed, such as knowing the forecast and weather patterns in the area you’re exploring, being aware of where water resources exist, and what potentially poisonous and/or dangerous animals, insects, and plants are prevalent in the area. Being prepared also ensures that you’re equipped with outdoor skills such as fishing and/or foraging if needed.
With a focus on thoughtful preparation, here’s our short list of gear, equipment, and supplies you should consider bringing with you on your next adventure:
· Shelter, including a tarp, tent, sleeping bag or warm blanket, duct tape, sturdy footwear, a dry, weather-appropriate change of clothing, and rainwear
· Lighting. Solar-powered lanterns are great, but if you anticipate rain, it’ll be helpful to bring a battery-powered flashlight and extra batteries.
· Electronics & Communication: portable chargers/power, a whistle, a hand-crank radio, and perhaps a two-way radio
· Orienteering tools: a compass and local map come in handy if you entirely lose signal or power on electronic devices
· A first-aid kit including prescription medications, towels, cleaning agents, hand sanitizer, waste bags, hygiene products, and bandages
· Food & water including dehydrated food, energy bars, trail mix, nuts, a water purification system, water containers, a camping stove and fuel, pots/pans, plates, utensils, a lighter, and a fire extinguisher
