BlueSign Certified & 1% for the Planet: What Does it Mean and Why Does it Matter?

How many pairs of jeans are in your closet? According to the United Nations Environment Programme, it takes 3,781 liters of water to make a single pair.

The textile industry is responsible for producing about 20% of the world’s annual wastewater, it puts the equivalent of 50 billion plastic bottles into our oceans each year, it fills air with pollution, and taints our soils.

But it’s not all doom and gloom.

Founded in 2000 in an effort to reduce the environmental burden of the textile industry, BLUESIGN equips the full supply chain with comprehensive sustainability solutions to increase environmental responsibility and deepen consumer trust. Their team includes chemists, supply chain experts, and factory auditors.

BLUESIGN helps factories involved in the apparel supply chain use resources more wisely. To eliminate harmful dyes and chemicals. To reduce water, energy, and chemical use. To improve the health and safety of factory workers. To reduce pollution.

Founded in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard and Craig Mathews, 1% for the Planet “brings dollars and doers together to accelerate smart environmental giving.” Each member company commits to donating 1% of their annual sales to the organization. In his book, “Let My People Go Surfing,” Chouinard writes, “the intent of 1% for the Planet is to help fund these diverse environmental organizations so that collectively, they can be a more powerful source in solving the world’s problems. Today, the organization boasts more than 3,000 member companies including Honest Tea and New Belgium Brewing, among others listed below. To date, they’ve certified more than $250 million in support to approved environmental nonprofits.

At Yellow Wood, we’re proud to carry these brands, who have made the sometimes costly, but important decision to prioritize the health and wellbeing of our planet.
